Zig Zag It Up!

Zig Zag is everywhere and I love it! It was the genius Italian Missoni Family that made the zig zag a beloved classic on the runways. Missoni also creates fashion for the home to enjoy (oh to sleep on Missoni woven knit). Textile queen Madeline Weinrib took the zig zag to a whole new interior level. Designer Kelly Wearstler has never been afraid of a zig zag flame stitch fabric. Look for financially savvy alternatives to these looks on Ebay.com or Etsy.com. Here are some Decorator in a Box zig zag favorites. Enjoy!

Custom Printed Fabric Oh My!

Have you ever wished you could create your own fabric? On almost every project there is usually one fabric I search for and cannot find. I have a picture in my mind, but just can't seem to find the print anywhere. This problem has been solved by the brilliant company www.spoonflower.com. Spoonflower allows you to upload images and create custom printed fabrics. The best part is that all printing is done in an eco friendly manner. I discovered this site from a MyDiab fan, who discovered them via Design*Sponge (i love d*s). Be careful the site is addictive and you may waste hours… create at your own risk. Happy fabric designing everyone!

To Be a Kid Again!

I just finished a very whimsical design from one of my most inspiring clients. The inspiration was a five year old girl who loves ballet, fairies, puppies, skateboarding and creating artwork. I did my best to create a space that achieved all those requirements. My favorite part about working on this room was that I got to be a kid all over again. This project really took me back to my days of fairy dust, tutu's and tea parties. I hope it takes you back enjoy!

Have Suitcase Don't Travel?

{above photo via fclo.com}

I love vintage suitcases, especially when they don't travel. Don't get me wrong I love to travel! I just smile when I see a pretty stack of vintage travel gear. You can find great vintage suitcases on Etsy, Craigslist, 1stdibs or local flea markets and antique shops. Check out landofnod.com for kids suitcases that make great toy storage. They come in so many fun prints and colors. Stack them to create a nightstand, end table or even a table base. Check out these creative uses for vintage suitcases!

Chalkboard Door

While skimming photos from a featured home on Design*Sponge I spotted this door. I love the idea of putting a chalkboard insert in place of the glass. If the glass is existing on the door you could just use chalkboard paint. I like that the door is not being used as a door. I am always trying to use pieces in places you would not expect. By making this simple change to an ordinary reclaimed and salvaged door it becomes a useful piece. It is a great way to not loose your to do list as well!

Alberta Canada Design Brings the Outside In!

I just completed a very tranquil and natural design for a client in Alberta Canada. The inspiration for the room was the Dwell Chinoiserie Bedding and the lovely view out the window. In order to create a calm and soothing feel in the space we brought the outside in. This was accomplished by selecting reclaimed wood furniture, natural fiber rugs and art that reflects nature. This room is a great place to curl up after a hike through Alberta's lovely landscape.
